The Royal Independent School District is located in southern Waller County and serves the communities of Brookshire, Pattison, Sunnyside, and the surrounding areas. The district boundaries are FM 529 to the north, the Harris county line to the east, the Fort Bend county line to the south, and the Brazos River to the west. This area contains a total of 161 square miles.

The district was established by special election in January, 1959, when the citizens of the Brookshire and Pattison School Districts voted to consolidate. The newly combined district was known as the Pattison-Brookshire Consolidated Independent School District. Then in February of 1960, the Board of Trustees renamed it Royal Independent School District.

Royal I.S.D. currently operates four schools on four separate campuses. These campuses include: Royal Early Childhood Center (REC), Royal Elementary School (RES), Royal Middle School (RMS), and Royal High School (RHS). Three of our campuses are located halfway between Pattison and Brookshire on Durkin Road. Royal Early Childhood Center is located on 2nd Street in Pattison.

The District serves a total student population of 1,900 students from pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Special programs are available to all students through compensatory education, special education, English as a second language (ESL), bilingual, vocational education, gifted and talented (G/T), advanced placement (AP), and honors programs. The student population is culturally and ethnically diverse. With 15% Caucasian, 28% Black, 56% Hispanic, and 1% Asian/Pacific Islander.

Royal ISD is one of the largest employers in the Brookshire and Pattison area with 233 employees. Of this number 166 are classroom teachers. Salaries range from $45,225 to $60,498.  The district also offers performance incentives of up to $5,000 per teacher to qualifying campuses.  Master's degrees are held by 8.3% of the teaching staff. And the average years of teaching experience is 10.5. Our student to teacher ratio is an outstanding 13.3 to 1.

Royal ISD schools are well-maintained, and all instructional classrooms are air-conditioned. The district is a drug-free, gun-free, and alcohol-free facility where student discipline is a priority. The district is in the process of establishing its own police force. It is dedicated to maintaining an orderly and safe educational environment for all students and staff.

In November, residents of Royal ISD approved funding for the construction of a new high school and a new early childhood center, as well as the upgrade of existing facilities.
